how?

last night, i sat in my room drinking wine, and listening to the joshua tree. candles washing the walls, and still windless air. the air that is never seen, but only felt. this we know exists. a fact. but how, for the love of god, did they make that brilliant record? how? i just can't seem to wrap my head around it. i guess only my heart really fits. sometimes, someone creates something entirely beyond their human limitations, something that we cannot explain, but can feel. this morning, it is the queen is dead. how, how how?

I continue to enjoy your writings here. Joshua Tree is indeed a beautiful thing, I think I may listen to it myself later today. Thanks for the reminder ;)

"Bullet the Blue Sky" has to be in the top ten of all time.

Posted by: ChinRingDingO at February 4, 2004 10:34 AM

call me ignorant, but i haven't a single clue about joshua tree. will look into it though.

as far as brilliance...i've always been astounded by the drumming talents of adrian young of "no doubt". my god that man can drum. geesh. yes, no doubt that group is commercialized (no pun intended), but the fact is, they ARE talented, and have TRULY EARNED their fame/recognition.

i remember the drummer (forgot her name) in your band, jefferson, at your live performance in the city last...um...was it august? that gal fuckin' ROCKS!!! i was THIS close to building a shrine to worship her.

Posted by: Brina at February 4, 2004 11:00 AM

personally i cannot stand no doubt...i find them to be bloody awful. unbearable. but then we are all different. different things touch us. as for mie, yes she was good, but she has been gone a long time upon my insistence. a story i will not tell. quite funny though. hmmmmmmm.

Posted by: jeff pitcher at February 4, 2004 12:42 PM

mie..."a story (you) will not tell"??? that'll change.

yes, indeed, we all have differences in taste. makes us unique/special in each of our own ways, as long as we have opinions. no apathy is allowed here. =) i remember your dislikes, and sometimes i pretend to like them just to irritate you. it's fun.

Posted by: Brina at February 4, 2004 12:56 PM

I LOVE 'no doubt'!!!!

Jeff, remain open to the possibility that you might be missing their brilliance. Millions of fans cannot be wrong.

Posted by: keri at February 4, 2004 03:01 PM

the BackStreet Boys also sold millions of records....

Posted by: ChiN at February 4, 2004 03:06 PM

AMEN Keri!!!!!!!!!!!

...and Jefferson...remember the meaning of your record label, "Mudita"...

(i have no comment re: backstreet boys, though =)

Posted by: Brina at February 4, 2004 03:52 PM

I, too, abhor No Doubt. I wish I didn't because Gwen Stefani seems like a kind of pop/puck/feme icon. But her voice is horrible and their lyrics are lacking.
As for joshua tree and U2, rattle and hum, baby. Live rock and roll with a gospel choir. What could be more moving?

Posted by: summer at February 4, 2004 03:55 PM

i think i may have to make ATOT t-shirts that say "millions of fans can't be wrong."
Angel of Harlem. Great song.

Posted by: summer at February 4, 2004 04:30 PM

Summer, i agree. i've always thought No Doubt's lyrics are lacking, particularly the song, "New", but i love their play on instruments/sounds. on the other hand, i also like morbid/bitter stuff, like Garbage ("i'm only happy when it rains"), Nine Inch and Ani DiFranco, and whimsical/fun stuff like White Stripes, etc. my taste is soooooo eclectic.

Posted by: Brina at February 4, 2004 05:36 PM

summer, maybe they should say 12 fans can't be wrong.

and I think I'm rounding up.

No offense Pitcher, I know you're working hard. But its the truth.

Posted by: t at February 4, 2004 06:27 PM

My shirt's going to say:

Christian Kiefer
Millions of fans are wrong.

Meanwhile, if any of you are SF-based, I'm playing the Bottom of the Hill on Friday night. I'm on first (10pm). Jeff Pitcher will be in the audience if that's any incentive.

How's that for a selfish plug?

Hot love,

Christian

Posted by: Christian Kiefer at February 4, 2004 10:45 PM

And I will be there playing cello with christian, if that's any incentive.

Posted by: kristina at February 4, 2004 11:45 PM

Yeah, good point. I have 1/3 of Orange Trees playing with me. So there. Now you have to come.

Posted by: Christian Kiefer at February 5, 2004 07:16 AM

christian - being 1 of 12 fans who can't be wrong, i actually planned to catch your show (having nothing to do with the incentives you've just listed). i like your work and had hoped to get a taste of it "live". but to my utter regret, i can't make it. maybe your next show...

...and kristina...i love cello. an instrument i can't play, but i admire those who can. i think they're very "sexy".

kill them tomorrow night, you guys. kill 'em.

Posted by: Brina at February 5, 2004 08:13 AM

gwen stefani was a lot of fun back in the ska punk revival in the early 90's. played some great little shows and house parties with sublime. welp, price of fame maybe.

I like your music kiefer. a friend of mine dropped it on me. And I don't know if it's the cello.....I think kristina would still be sexy if she played the tuba.

Posted by: trex at February 5, 2004 12:04 PM

yay! I'm so excited!

Posted by: summer at February 5, 2004 04:57 PM

U2 is tied for the greatest band of all time. The beatles. Need I say more? No doubt is an excellent band and quite (heh) under rated. They opened for U2 a few years ago if memory serves, and it does. Gwen Stefani, while not quite the lyracist that Sinead O'connor is, sure can tell about pain, love and all the shit in between. If I could only listen to one U2 song it would have to be One, lol. I slay me.
John Rensing
Wow, not one shitty comment, I must be gettin' soft. Or maybe it's the impending onset of fatherhood.

Posted by: John Rensing at February 5, 2004 06:40 PM

And that's The Beatles.

Posted by: John Rensing at February 5, 2004 06:41 PM

And Christian, I'd be honored to be the thirteenth fan. 'Cuz I am.
John Rensing

Posted by: John Rensing at February 5, 2004 06:43 PM

i would hate myself in the morning if i went to see a show only because jeff would be in the audience.

Posted by: irene at February 5, 2004 09:37 PM

That's why it was funny.

Millions of music fans are wrong. No Doubt might be a great band but ska is still stupid.

John, my 13th fan: Congratulations on your impending fatherhood. Sleep now or forever hold your peace.

I'll see some of you tomorrow. And yes, Brina, we will kill.

Posted by: Christian Kiefer at February 5, 2004 11:04 PM

john - congratulations on your fatherhood, and i mean that with absolute sincerity. no mockery this time. there's nothing more beautiful to me than a vision of a father embracing his child.

as much as i cherish my freedom and independence above all else, i would love to be a mother. if i had a girl...

first name : Jasmine
middle name: Love
last name: tbd

...to slumber peacefully in sweet bliss like gustav klimt's painting of a mother and her child...

again, genuine congrats, john. and thank you for sharing this side of you with us.
