A year can be such a terribly long time.

John Cage says: “I was studying with Schoenberg one day as he was writing some counterpoint to show the way to do it, and he used an eraser. While he was doing this he said, “This end of the pencil is just as important as the other end.” A good metaphor about nearly everything I believe.

A busy weekend full of beautiful things. The most glorious of rides. 40 miles or so, into the forested hills. Horses beside the road, pushing away flies with their tails. A most generous man, giving us much furniture and plants for our new home. (He and his wife moving to Beijing) reading and reading and reading. They sure do make you read a lot in graduate school. An hour or so experimenting with the guitar. Strange sounds from strange rooms filled with boxes. We move to (another, different) new home in 2.5 weeks. I do my best to refrain from counting. Long story. The books loom. Perhaps later, I tell.

Presently quite fascinated by this artist.
